With changes in regulartory guidance for motor carriers, commercial motor vehicles drivers, and medical examiners there has been an increase in screening of drivers for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Recommendations from the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC) and the Medical Review Board (MRB) recommend that drivers with OSA be certified annually based on compliance with treatment. (4 hours per day on 70% of days). The MCSAC and MRB recommend that conditional certifications be granted on the following conditions:

  1. AHI >20 until compliant with PAP -or-
  2. Driver has undergone surgery and is pending post-op findings -or-
  3. Driver has a BMI greater than or equal to 35 Kg/m pending a sleep study. (BMI threshold should be objectively related to crash risk and considered along with neck circumference, complaints of daytime            sleepiness, hypertenstion, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, and family history.)

Drivers with suspected OSA may be certified for 60 days pending a sleep study and treatment (if diagnosed). Within 60 days, if the driver being treated is compliant (4 hours per day for 70% of days) can receive an additional 90-day conditional certification.  After 90 days, if compliant, the driver can be certified for 1 year.

If a patient is suspected of having OSA, the patient’s  primary care physician will need to fax a referral to Delta HST, LTD. Once the referral is received, Delta HST will check insurance benefits, contact the patient, set-up the appointment and educate the patient on home sleep equipment . Once the study is performed and equipment is returned, it will be downloaded and scored by a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. Once scored, our Boarded Sleep Physician will interpret the study. The study will be sent back to the patients referring doctor and equipment ordered through Seeley Medical if test results are positive unless primary care doctor wants to manage the patient.  Any further questions please call us at 330-270-3950 or toll free at 1-855-635-8096.
